Below are pictures which were
donated to Living In Cebu, by Mr. Ronald Samphere, a former
serviceman who was in the Philippines between 1960 and 1961.
Ronald
was a member of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, 3rd
Marine Division. We had a wonderful time talking with him,
during his first trip to Cebu. He was to continue on, going
back to Olongapo, to see if he could locate any of the Filipinos
who were in these pictures.
I don't know what happened to
Ronald, other than that he ultimately married a Filipina. I know he
ended up taking her back to the US, although he lived here
for some time, after they were married.

In the pictures above, taken
sometime in December 1960, you will
see troops of Delta Company working to replace the roof on the Olongapo
Hospital. |

In the picture above, two staff members of the hospital
pose with marines, and their favorite beverage, San Miguel beer. The marines were
given all the beer they could drink (by the hospital), as payment for
services rendered. From what Ron told me, while I was talking and
viewing these photos, the hospital, he believed anyway, paid for all the
materials for the roof, with Delta Company supplying all the labor needed
to replace it.. |

The two pictures above (Ron is in the left photo) were
taken in January 1961. In the left picture, Ron is somewhere near
the Manila Hotel, but he didn't recall exactly where the photo was taken.
In the picture on the right, Ron took a photo of a few of the Manila
Executive Athletic Club staff members, and other marines. This was
just outside the Manila Hotel Gymnasium.
Ron is a pretty nice guy. Ever
since I was a little boy, I have enjoyed chatting
with active, reserve, and former servicemen, getting
their take on various things that has happened over
the years, concerning my country during wartime and
peace.
You know, I
never thought I would enjoy history as much as I do,
when I was just a boy in school. In fact, I hated it
back then. It is amazing how things change over the
course of your life. |

introductory book for you to begin learning
the basics of Cebuano.
The book is titled Conversational English-Cebuano Made Easy, by
Cristina Canonigo, a Filipina who has authored more than 100 books, to date.
An earlier version of
this book, the 2001 edition, is the version I used
to begin learning Cebuano, when I first arrived in Cebu, to
live. It was a
great first book for me. I assure you, if you
spend a few minutes per day with it, you will
begin to learn Cebuano as well.
